Setting a Beautiful Shabbat Table
This guest post was written exclusively for Israel Home Store by Sandy Brudner, an interior designer and owner of Sandy B Interiors
Imagine stepping into a home on a Friday night, where the flickering candles cast a warm glow over a beautifully set table. The joyous conversation, the clink of fine china, and the aroma of freshly baked challah fill the air.
There's something special about a gorgeously prepare Shabbat table which transforms an ordinary meal into an beautiful gathering, where the holy day of Shabbat is cherished.
Whether you love an elaborate tablespace with fine china and floral arrangements or prefer a simple and inviting setup, your Shabbat table can set the tone for the entire evening. With just a few thoughtful touches, you can create an atmosphere of beauty, warmth, and meaning that welcomes everyone to the table.
Layering: The Secret to a Cozy and Beautiful Table
One of the keys when setting the table is layering. It’s an easy way to make your table look complete. I start with a nice tablecloth - crisp white for a classic look, or a textured fabric depending on the overall look.
I’ll add placemats or chargers at each setting - I have ones in different colors and materials like bamboo, mirror, leather, fabric and even corkboard. They come in all different shapes and sizes.
Then add the plates, napkins, and glassware. I'll add a smaller plate over the dinner plate in a complimentary color to coordinate with my color scheme. This instantly makes the table look intentional and put together.
Mixing Colors and Textures
I normally stick to off white, gold and neutral colors for Shabbat because it compliments my home décor perfectly. For holidays, I experiment with different themes and colors. For Purim last year I used a bright turquoise tablecloth with white dishes, topped with small turquoise dishes and gold accents. My centerpieces were a bright fuchsia pink and everyone had a mini turquoise and fuchsia eye mask waiting for them at their setting. This bright pop of color was perfect for this fun holiday and made for a happy and delightful gathering that added so much personality.
Floral Centerpieces or Not
Floral centerpieces are great, but there’s nothing worse than trying to have a conversation and having to peek around a massive floral arrangement. Or to bring out the food and not have room for the main course.
I like to keep it simple by creating a vignette of décor pieces and candles at different heights.
Many Shabbats I'll create centerpieces of beautiful platters of different shapes, heights and sizes arranged with an assortment of deliciously cooked salads.
It's in the Details
The details help create a space where family and friends feel welcome, where conversations flow, and where the beauty of Shabbat shines through. Whether you go all out or keep it simple, the effort you put into making the table special adds to the joy of the evening.
So this week, as you prepare for Shabbat, take a moment to enjoy the process. Light the candles, set the table with care, and let your family know you're so happy they're here.
With blessing for a beautiful and peaceful Shabbat!
